SPORTING CLAYS COURSE

The Catawba Valley Wildlife Club (CVWC) Sporting Clays course consists of 10 shooting stations scattered through a large wooded area. The course provides easy walking, but personal golf carts are allowed on the course if desired. No carts are provided by CVWC. At each shooting station there are 2 traps. You are presented with 5 targets at each station. There is usually 1 single target, 2 report pairs (the second target is thrown at the report of the first shot), or 1 true pair (2 targets are thrown at the same time), although this varies at each station. One round of Sporting Clays consists of 50 targets. The suggested menu for the targets is posted at each station. The targets vary in the type of target and the presentation of each target. The targets consist of regulation size skeet, midi clays, mini clays, “rabbit” clays, and battue clays. All are aerial targets except the rabbit clays, which usually roll across the ground, although they often “hop” to provide challenging targets. The course of fire is changed often to give the shooter some challenging targets along with some “feel-good” targets.
Shooters are grouped into squads that usually consist of 3 to 6 people. The squads are allowed to throw the targets and keep score for themselves. One “show pair” is allowed to each squad to view the target presentation before trying to shoot the targets. The object is to have fun.
The current rates for one round of Sporting Clays is $10 for CVWC members and $20 for guests. The course is open to guests each first and third Saturday of every month, weather permitting. Shooting hours run from 8 am to 3 pm in the summer, and 9 am to 2 pm in the winter. Each shooter must provide their own ammunition, which must use shot sizes 7.5, 8, or 9, only due to safety on the course
